The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are
Great book on personal development. Also watch Brene Brown’s mega-million viewed TED talks: The power of vulnerability https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare Listening to shame https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_listening_to_shame?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare This is the paperback version - you can also get it on Kindle!
Brené Brown’s game-changing New York Times bestseller, The Gifts of Imperfection, has sold more than 2 million copies in more than 30 different languages and is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in print. Forbes magazine named Gifts one of the "Five Books That Will Actually Change Your Outlook On Life." Through this self-help classic we find courage to overcome paralyzing fear and self-consciousness, strengthening our connection to the world and helping us to believe we are worthy of self-discovery, personal growth, and boundless love. A motivational and inspiring guide to wholehearted living, rather than just the average self-help book, with this groundbreaking work Brené Brown, Ph.D., bolsters the self-esteem and personal development process through her characteristic heartfelt, honest storytelling. With original research and plenty of encouragement, she explores the psychology of releasing our definitions of an “imperfect” life and embracing living authentically. Brown’s “ten guideposts” are benchmarks for authenticity that can help anyone establish a practice for a life of honest beauty—a perfectly imperfect life. Now more than ever, we all need to cultivate feelings of self-worth, as well as acceptance and love for ourselves. In a world where insults, criticisms, and fears are spread too generously alongside messages of unrealistic beauty, attainment, and expectation, we look for ways to “dig deep” and find truth and gratitude in our lives. A new way forward means we can’t hold on too tightly to our own self-defeating thoughts or the displaced pain in our world. Instead, we can embrace the imperfection.

This Is Water: Some Thoughts, Delivered on a Significant Occasion, about Living a Compassionate Life
Very short and interesting book. I recommend it to just spur some thoughts on life. This is the Hardcover version - you can also get it on Kindle!
In this rare peak into the personal life of the author of numerous bestselling novels, gain an understanding of David Foster Wallace and how he became the man that he was. Only once did David Foster Wallace give a public talk on his views on life, during a commencement address given in 2005 at Kenyon College. The speech is reprinted for the first time in book form in This is Water. How does one keep from going through their comfortable, prosperous adult life unconsciously? How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? The speech captures Wallace's electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others. After his death, it became a treasured piece of writing reprinted in The Wall Street Journal and the London Times, commented on endlessly in blogs, and emailed from friend to friend. Writing with his one-of-a-kind blend of causal humor, exacting intellect, and practical philosophy, David Foster Wallace probes the challenges of daily living and offers advice that renews us with every reading.

Payoff - The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations
This book summarizes incredible research and data (so you don't have to read all the research) that is really groundbreaking in how people are motivated. It's not money (mostly) and how the value of meaning matters. If you're a leader or want to be, this book is for you. This is the Paperback version - you can also get it on Kindle!
Bestselling author Dan Ariely reveals fascinating new insights into motivation—showing that the subject is far more complex than we ever imagined. Every day we work hard to motivate ourselves, the people we live with, the people who work for and do business with us. In this way, much of what we do can be defined as being “motivators.” From the boardroom to the living room, our role as motivators is complex, and the more we try to motivate partners and children, friends and coworkers, the clearer it becomes that the story of motivation is far more intricate and fascinating than we’ve assumed. Payoff investigates the true nature of motivation, our partial blindness to the way it works, and how we can bridge this gap. With studies that range from Intel to a kindergarten classroom, Ariely digs deep to find the root of motivation—how it works and how we can use this knowledge to approach important choices in our own lives. Along the way, he explores intriguing questions such as: Can giving employees bonuses harm productivity? Why is trust so crucial for successful motivation? What are our misconceptions about how to value our work? How does your sense of your mortality impact your motivation?

The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently...and Why
Since so many of us are global now...
A “landmark book” (Robert J. Sternberg, president of the American Psychological Association) by one of the world's preeminent psychologists that proves human behavior is not “hard-wired” but a function of culture. Everyone knows that while different cultures think about the world differently, they use the same equipment for doing their thinking. But what if everyone is wrong? The Geography of Thought documents Richard Nisbett's groundbreaking international research in cultural psychology and shows that people actually think about—and even see—the world differently because of differing ecologies, social structures, philosophies, and educational systems that date back to ancient Greece and China. As a result, East Asian thought is “holistic”—drawn to the perceptual field as a whole and to relations among objects and events within that field. By contrast, Westerners focus on salient objects or people, use attributes to assign them to categories, and apply rules of formal logic to understand their behavior. From feng shui to metaphysics, from comparative linguistics to economic history, a gulf separates the children of Aristotle from the descendants of Confucius. At a moment in history when the need for cross-cultural understanding and collaboration have never been more important, The Geography of Thought offers both a map to that gulf and a blueprint for a bridge that will span it.

The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure And Material Advantage Are Creating A Generation Of Disconnected And Unhappy Kids
Another book that you need to read if you are working in the education field or with kids. Read the Amazon description but my first introduction to this was listening to the author on the radio. Their initial research was in depression. They were looking at poor kids and happiness and using rich kids as the CONTROL group (assuming the rich kids were happy and well adjusted and were going to measure how bad the poor kids felt). They found the rich kids were the ones with problems. This is a serious issue in society and not one to ignore...
In this ground-breaking book on the children of affluence, a well-known clinical psychologist exposes the epidemic of emotional problems that are disabling America’s privileged youth, thanks, in large part, to normalized, intrusive parenting that stunts the crucial development of the self. In recent years, numerous studies have shown that bright, charming, seemingly confident and socially skilled teenagers from affluent, loving families are experiencing epidemic rates of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders—rates higher than in any other socioeconomic group of American adolescents. Materialism, pressure to achieve, perfectionism, and disconnection are combining to create a perfect storm that is devastating children of privilege and their parents alike. In this eye-opening, provocative, and essential book, clinical psychologist Madeline Levine explodes one child-rearing myth after another. With empathy and candor, she identifies toxic cultural influences and well-intentioned, but misguided, parenting practices that are detrimental to a child's healthy self-development. Her thoughtful, practical advice provides solutions that will enable parents to help their emotionally troubled "star" child cultivate an authentic sense of self.

Create A Happy And Harmonious Home: Experienced and Effective Parenting Advice
This is an amazing book from a great friend of mine - Amanda Olson. She founded Ask Master Mom (check out AskMasterMom.com) which helps parents and other caregivers with problems they have. There is even a regular Ask Master Mom TV show! This is the Kindle version - the paperback and iBooks version will be released soon!
Firstly, I want to say congratulations! You have become the caregiver and role model to a child. This may be as a parent, grandparent, foster parent or other significant person in a child’s life. …Now, what next? What do you really do after that? You have been given the arduous task of never making a mistake from this moment on and for the rest of your life. Don’t feed them the wrong things, don’t let them watch the wrong things, make sure they are the smartest, most advanced or most athletic child in everything they do and by all means, make sure they are always perfect little angels whenever any other human being, from the mail man to the school headmaster, is within earshot of you and your children. If you can at least do all of that, you will have mastered parenting! A little daunting isn’t it? All parents have been embarrassed, appalled and shocked at things their children have done in public. When your child throws up all over your boss, or your eight-year-old blurts out to your best friend, “You smell funny!” Or, your child starts belching loudly at a restaurant, or disrespects you in front of other parents, or sticks her tongue out at the teacher, or tells the pastor that church is boring, or writes about the time you had too much to drink and how funny it was in an essay contest at school and on and on! See, you are so, not alone! YouTube videos of other people’s children are funny until moments like these actually happen to you! Which trust me, they will. So how do we handle that? How do we teach them manners, good behavior, common sense without losing our minds? How do we teach them to be well disciplined, friendly and thoughtful? That is where I come in, Master Mom, to help save the day and help you become a true master of parenting! Let’s get started!

Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World--and Why Things Are Better Than You Think
This book should blow your perceptions away. Another example that common sense isn’t common. At LEAST get the book and do the quiz at the beginning and check out your answers...
“One of the most important books I’ve ever read―an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates “Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” ―Melinda Gates "Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends―what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school―we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective―from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future. --- “This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance…Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

For martial arts school owners (or any business) - creating a culture for the customers / clients / students is important. The term “cult” is defined differently below but a broader definition of a cult is simply as a shortening of “culture”. Douglas Atkin discovered lessons we can use by comparing social cults to hyper-successful companies. Great book.

I gave the analysis to my staff - very revealing. One odd note: the hardcover is cheaper when I posted this than the paperback...

Fiction Recommendation: Bernard Kerik "The Grave Above The Grave"
Bernie Kerik is an amazing human being. From running NY’s jails to being the commissioner of NY during 911, he has got incredibly TRUE stories to tell. I have been lucky enough to be able to hear him speak multiple times and along with Stephen Oliver and Jeff Smith have met him on many occasions. So, his first fiction book is from someone who has really “lived it”!

Start With No
This is a great “sales” book because it gives you permission to give them the option “no, don’t do it” but often we’re afraid to say that out loud. I don’t mind saying “well, karate isn’t for everyone so this may not be the right thing for you. If you don’t think this is the best thing you have ever done for your child then you should definitely quit and do something else!”. There is power in not trying for win-win.

Anything by Cialdini is GREAT! Dataclysm
This book is kinda scary... For centuries, we’ve relied on polling or small-scale lab experiments to study human behavior. Today, a new approach is possible. As we live more of our lives online, researchers can finally observe us directly, in vast numbers, and without filters. Data scientists have become the new demographers. In this daring and original book, Rudder explains how Facebook "likes" can predict, with surprising accuracy, a person’s sexual orientation and even intelligence; how attractive women receive exponentially more interview requests; and why you must have haters to…

Nanovation
I love this book about building something no one thought to build before. It’s partly the story of Tata motors who built an amazing car for the masses of India BUT it’s MORE about innovation and what it really is, plus how to overcome insurmountable odds. Do you have the eyes, the ears, and the hands to be a Nanovator? You're about to find out. The very idea was supposed to be impossible. A safe and appealing family car for the price of a motor scooter? The experts dismissed it. But Ratan Tata was undeterred. When budget constraints, design restrictions, the rising costs of materials, and poli…

4 Hour Work Week
Everyone in business or wanting to be in business should read this book to help focus on the important thing in your life - TIME. While the title is a bit misleading (you don’t really HAVE to only work 4 hours a week - though you could), this book is full of strategies you can use and concepts you should understand to make much better use of your most important resource... Some of the outsourcing stuff to India is a bit outdated (at least I wasn’t able to use it) but don’t let that dissuade you from reading - it’s worth it!

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
Flow is a critical book in terms of “optimal experience” which I would also call a happy life. Happiness isn’t because you get to stay out late and party - it’s because you’re engaged in your life. If you work with people read this. Bonus if you can pronounce “Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi”...
